Roses from the Heart

The “Roses from the Heart” Project created by Australian artist Christina Henri  is a tribute to the more than 25,000 convict women from England and Ireland who were shipped to Australia between 1788 and 1853.
Christina Henri wants 25,566 bonnets made with empathy for these convict woman who endured so much and yet have received so little recognition.
I saw the installation of about 20.000 bonnets at the Birmingham Quilt Festival last summer but eventually forgot about it.
Now Heike Baier-Lück published the pattern for sewing such a bonnet in the German Patchwork Guild Magazine and called for more bonnets as Christina Henri still needs about 5000 more. This is the bonnet I am contributing with. On one side the name of the deportee (Margaret Byrne only has been 15 years old at the time of her deportation) is stitched and on the other side the name of the ship that took her to Australia.

So very beautiful and especially moving. And I did love the Easter bit at the end, too!

I hope you are feeling well and recovering in good form from your surgery. I think of you often.
