Post aus Neuseeland - Mail from New Zealand

Heute hatte ich eine schöne Überraschung aus Neuseeland im Briefkasten! Meine Tochter hat mir drei typisch neuseeländische Stöffchen geschickt, außerdem einen Fingerhut mit stilisierten Kiwis drauf für meine Sammlung und Bilder, die sie im Patchworkladen für mich aufgenommen hat.
Hab ich mich gefreut!!!!


Today I found a wonderful surprise from New Zealand in the mailbox! My daughter has sent me three fabric FQs with typical NZ design, a thimble with stylized Kiwis for my collection and photos she had taken from her visit in the patchwork shop. Needless to say she made my day!!!

Gent / Belgium

Auf der Rückfahrt haben wir noch Halt in Belgien gemacht. Gent mit seinen unglaublich vielen mittelalterlichen Bauten hat uns besonders gut gefallen.

On our way home we made a stop in Belgium. We especially loved Gent with its many medieval buildings.

England und Wales

Nach dem Quilt-Festival haben wir uns noch etwas die Westküste Englands und Wales angeschaut, bevor wir wieder zurück nach Dover gefahren sind, um dort die Fähre nach Frankreich zu nehmen.

After the Quilt Festival we visited England's west coast and Wales before we headed back to Dover to get our ferry to France.

Birmingham

Dies sind die Quilts, die Beas Söhne (6 und 8 Jahre) gemacht haben. Der Fische-Quilt hat sogar den zweiten Platz in seiner Kategorie gemacht!! Eine bemerkenswerte Leistung, wie ich finde!
These two quilts are made by Bea's sons (6 an 8!). The fish quilt even won a second prize in its category!! A remarkable accomplishment, I think!


BIRMINGHAM hat aber auch als Stadt einiges zu bieten. Hätte ich gar nicht gedacht, dass es mir dort so gut gefallen würde. An den zahlreichen Kanälen der Stadt (angeblich mehr als in Venedig !) sind Geschäfte und Restaurants entstanden und laden zum abendlichen Bummel ein.

BIRMINGHAM has to offer much more than I had thought and I liked it very much. Numerous shops and restaurants along the many canals (as I've been told even more than in Venice!) are inviting you to stroll along the waterfront.

The Festival of Quilts

14 to 17 August. Open 10am to 5.30pm (closes 5pm Sunday 17th). The largest quilt show in Europe. Running for its sixth year, the show comprises over 1,000 competition quilts on display, galleries from leading international quilt artists and groups, over 200 exhibitors selling specialist patchwork and quilting supplies, plus hundreds of masterclasses, workshops and lectures. Not forgetting the evening events to keep the quilters entertained after the show closes!


Morgen breche ich also mit meinem Göga in Richtung England auf! Die Batterien meines Fotoapparates sind geladen und mein Geldbeutel mit £££££ bestückt :))

Färben mit Rost - Rust Dyeing

Hier habe ich mal Seide gerostet. Auf den Fotos kommt es immer gar nicht so gut raus, aber es sind, wie ich finde, ganz schöne Halstücher geworden.

Here you can see a scarf made of rusted silk. I think it is in fact much more beautiful than you can see on the photo.

Da nun schon einige Leute nach einer Anleitung zum Rosten gefragt haben, will ich jetzt doch grob erklären, wie es geht. Genaueres müsst ihr dann in der PATCHWORK Professional (#1/09) nachlesen ;-)
Some people have asked for a tutorial about rust dyeing. As I will publish one in a German patchwork magazine I only want to give a brief description here.

Im Prinzip ist der Vorgang simpel. Ich lege Gegenstände aus rostendem Material zwischen Stofflagen.
The process actually is quite simple. I am placing rusty things between layers of fabric.

Je nachdem, wie genau der Abdruck werden soll, wird der Stoff glatt gestrichen oder, z.B. bei Nägeln oder anderem rostigen Werkzeug, einfach locker drüber gelegt. Das Ganze bestreue ich mit etwas Salz und halte es gut feucht.

Depending on how precise I want the image to turn out I will flatten the fabric or just crumble it over things like rusty nails or tools. Then I will sprinkle some salt over the whole thing and keep it moist.

Nach 2 bis 3 Stunden hat die rostige Vorlage einen Abdruck im Stoff hinterlassen.
After 2 or 3 hours an image of the rusty sample will appear on the fabric.

Ausspülen, waschen, bügeln - fertig zum Bewundern!
Rinsing, washing, ironing - ready to admire!

Ist wirklich ganz einfach und macht total Spaß!
It's quite simple indeed and a lot of fun!

Ich roste - I'm rusting ;-)

Well, actually it's not me who is rusting - I am not that lazy ;-) I am experimenting with rust dyeing and it's a lot of fun! Once you've started you'll find endless possibilities to dye fabric with iron oxide.

Natürlich bin nicht ich es, die rostet - so träge bin ich nun auch wieder nicht ;-) Nein, seit einiger Zeit experimentiere ich mit dem Färbemittel Rost und kann gar nicht mehr aufhören, denn es fallen mir immer neue Möglichkeiten ein, um Stoff mit Eisenoxid zu färben.
