Regina Grewe ist ja immer sehr kreativ, wenn es darum geht, andere zum Mitnähen zu motivieren. Bei mir ist ihr das mit dieser allerliebsten Raben-Vorlage gelungen. Die gibt's bei ihr bis zum Ende des Monats gratis - wenn man eben auch mitnäht. Mir hat's jedenfalls Spaß gemacht, den kleinen Kerl zu nähen! Bei Bea gibt es übrigens ein weiteres Exemplar zu bewundern!

Regina Grewe is always very creative when it comes to motivating others to join in sewing. In my case she succeeded with this dear Raven template. You can get the pattern on her website for free until the end of the month - if you are willing to sew it. I had fun creating that little guy! BTW on Bea's blog you can admire another sample!

Töchterlein ist ja glücklicherweise unbeschadet wieder aus Ecuador zurückgekommen und hat mir obendrein noch wunderschöne Stücke für meine Sammlungen mitgebracht :-)

Dear daughter fortunately came back from Ecuador safely and on top of that has brought me wonderful pieces for my collection :-)

Die drei Fingerhüte vorne sind aus Tagua-Nüssen geschnitzt, die in Ecuador auch Steinnüsse oder Pflanzen-Elfenbein genannt werden. Insofern sind sie etwas ganz Besonderes.

The three thimbles in front are carved from tagua nuts, which are also called  stone nuts or vegetable ivory in Ecuador. So they are very special.

La Nariz del Diablo, die "Teufelsnase" ist ein 100 Meter hoher markanter Felsvorsprung über der Schlucht des Rio Chanchán in Ecuador. Er ist das markanteste Teilstück der Zugverbindung von Riobamba über Alausí durch mehrere Klimazonen des Landes. Die Gleise wurden in der steilen Wand der Teufelsnase fast übereinander gelegt und durch Spitzkehren miteinander verbunden.

La Nariz del Diablo, the "Devil's Nose" is a striking 100-meter high promontory above the gorge of the Rio Chanchán in Ecuador. It is the most striking section of the train connection from Riobamba via Alausí through several climatic zones of the country. The tracks were almost superimposed in the steep walls of the Devil's Nose and connected by switchbacks.

The Black Gate of Mordor

Im Oktober gab es wieder nur einen Block, dafür dreimal so groß wie die anderen.

Once again there has been only one block in October, but this one is three times as big as the others. This is the 24th block of the Lord-of-the-Rings BOM and there are only two months left.

Hab mir nun auch endlich einen dieser bezaubernden Tisch-Ständer für Miniquilts zugelegt. Da ich gebeten worden war, für die Miniquilt-Aktion der Patchwork Gilde einen kleinen Quilt zu entwerfen (den gibt's erst im November zu sehen!), der genau die passende Größe für diesen Ständer hat, war es jetzt einfach an der Zeit, dass ich mir auch einen anschaffe.

Finally I purchased one of those fabulous table top stands. I have designed a small quilt for the mini quilt project of the German Patchwork Guild (this one I cannot show you before November!) that exactly fits this stand, so of course I had to have one.

Martina hat mir von ihrer "Hochzeits-Reise" nach Mexico diesen Fingerhut mitgebracht. Das ist wirklich etwas ganz Besonderes, da Fingerhüte in Mexico nur schwer zu finden sind. Entsprechend groß war meine Freude natürlich!

Martina brought me one of those very rare Mexican thimbles from her trip to Mexico. Of course I've been thrilled to get one!

On handbags and purses

For a long time I am reading with amazement about other bloggers’ passion for all kinds of bags and purses. I have to confess now: I don’t like bags! Neither do I like to sew them, nor do I have the need to own various bags.
Of course I have a handbag, but only one. If it is well-worn, I will replace it with a new one. For shopping I use a basket.

Over the years however, I have been given some small (make-up) purses that I like to use (if I have to go to the hospital for example). My all-time favorite purse my school friend Barbara has sewn for me for my 18th birthday (well, such a long time ago…). I took it with me on all my journeys worldwide - and there were many. And each time I look at it, I almost cannot believe that Barbara has selected my favorite fabrics so many years ago and how beautiful I still find this combination of materials today (now that I am addicted to fabrics). I have often tried to find Barbara again after all these years, just to tell her that, but unfortunately we lost track of each other a long time ago. But whenever I am traveling, I think of her.

Schon lange verfolge ich mit einigem Unverständnis, wie sich viele meiner Mitbloggerinnen für alle Arten von Taschen begeistern. Ich muss mich jetzt mal outen: ich mag keine Taschen! Weder mag ich welche nähen, noch habe ich das Bedürfnis, mehrere Exemplare zu besitzen.

Natürlich habe ich eine Handtasche, aber eben immer nur eine. Wenn die nicht mehr schön ist, ersetze ich sie durch eine neue. Zum Einkaufen verwende ich einen Korb.

Im Laufe der Jahre habe ich jedoch einige kleine (Kosmetik-)Täschchen geschenkt bekommen, die ich gerne verwende (z.B. wenn ich ins Krankenhaus muss). Mein absolutes Lieblingstäschchen hat meine Schulfreundin Barbara zu meinem 18. Geburtstag (lang ist’s her) für mich genäht. Ich habe es bisher auf all meinen Reisen dabei gehabt – und das waren nicht wenige. Und immer, wenn ich es in die Hand nehme, kann ich kaum glauben, wie Barbara bereits vor so vielen Jahren bei der Stoffauswahl genau meinen Geschmack getroffen hat und wie schön ich genau diese Stoffkombination heute noch finde. Schon oft habe ich versucht, Barbara wieder zu finden, nur um ihr das zu sagen, aber leider haben wir uns schon lange aus den Augen verloren.  Aber immer, wenn ich unterwegs bin, denke ich an sie.

Nach langer Zeit habe ich mal wieder eine Dotee Doll angefertigt, für eine Freundin, die sich eine gewünscht hat.

... daher bin ich natürlich in letzter Zeit kaum zum Nähen gekommen. Lediglich zwei Blöcke für das Herr-der-Ringe Projekt sind entstanden.

First on vacation on the Camino de Santiago... now a full house with all the kids at home... nice summer weather, so spending much time outside... visiting my mother at the hospital every other day...

Diesen kleinen Pilger habe ich auf dem Jakobsweg getroffen. Wie ich hat auch er seine Habseligkeiten auf dem Rücken und genießt die Langsamkeit des Weges…

Was braucht man mehr zum Glücklichsein?

Zurück vom Jakobsweg

Nach rund 250 km, die wir zu Fuß von Porto / Portugal bis Santiago de Compostela / Spanien unterwegs waren, sind wir nun völlig tiefenentspannt und erholt wieder zurück in der Heimat.

Der Caminho Português führte uns – zum Teil auf alten Römerwegen - durch wunderschöne Landschaften und malerische Dörfer und Städtchen. Wir hatten ja gehofft, keinen Regen abzubekommen. Mit der enormen Hitze, die uns das Laufen jeden Tag zu einer beschwerlichen Anstrengung machte, hatten wir jedoch nicht gerechnet. Jeden Tag wolkenloser Himmel mit Temperaturen von weit über 30°C. Daher sind wir meist früh losgelaufen, um nicht allzu lange in der Mittagshitze unterwegs zu sein. Danach haben wir uns an das Vorbild der Einheimischen gehalten und lange Siesta gemacht, um den Rest des Tages Sehenswürdigkeiten zu besuchen oder entspannt auf den Dorfplätzen bei kalten Getränken und leckerem einheimischen Essen die Seele baumeln zu lassen.

Diese Pilgerreise hat mich viel Schweiß und Kraft gekostet und manchmal bin ich bis an die Grenzen meiner Leistungsfähigkeit gegangen. Eine Herausforderung für Geist und Körper.

Jedoch sind das intensive Erleben, die Faszination des Weges, die Konzentration auf das Wesentliche und letztendlich die Freude, es geschafft zu haben, eine nachhaltige Bereicherung.

Die Beschreibung der einzelnen Wegetappen mit Bildern werde ich in den nächsten Tag auf meinem Pilgerblog einstellen.

After about 250 km that we’ve been walking from Porto / Portugal to Santiago de Compostela / Spain we are now back home - deeply relaxed and completely recovered.

The Caminho Português led us - partly on old Roman ways - through beautiful scenery and quaint towns and villages. We had hoped not to get any rain. But we had not expected the tremendous heat that turned our daily walk into an exhausting effort. Cloudless skies with temperatures well above 30° C, each and every day. Therefore, we usually started walking early to avoid the midday heat as much as possible. After that we did as the locals do and made ​​a long siesta and spent the rest of the day visiting places of interest or relaxing in the village squares with cold drinks and delicious local food.

This pilgrimage has taken a lot of sweat and strength and sometimes I reached the limit of my capabilities. A challenge for body and mind.
However, the intense experience, the fascination of the way, the concentration on the essentials and ultimately the joy of having made it, are a sustainable enrichment.

Einen Gang herunterschalten...

„Einen Gang herunterschalten. Einmal diese künstliche Welt hinter sich lassen", hat der Pfarrer heute in seiner Predigt gesagt, „und sich auf das besinnen, was wirklich wichtig ist!

Die Sicherheit des eingefahrenen Lebens verlassen und Vertrauen haben darauf, dass zu jeder Zeit immer für alles Nötige gesorgt ist."

Wie passend! Denn schon übermorgen werde ich mich wieder einmal auf den Weg machen, nur mit dem Nötigsten auf dem Rücken, um in der Einfachheit des Pilgerlebens meine Lebensperspektive mal wieder etwas zurechtzurücken. Diesmal werde ich den portugiesischen Jakobsweg, den Caminho Português von Porto nach Santiago de Compostela gehen, die Route, die Linda letztes Jahr gepilgert ist. Begleiten wird mich mein Mann, der aber zur Bedingung gemacht hat, dass er nicht in Schlafsälen übernachten muss. Göga ist eben manchmal etwas empfindlich ;-) Das macht die Etappenplanung zwar etwas schwieriger, aber wir werden das irgendwie hinbekommen.

Für die Strecke von ca. 240 km haben wir etwa 12 Tage eingeplant, was sicher gut machbar ist.

Wie schon vor vier Jahren werde ich über unsere Pilgerreise in meinem Pilgerblog berichten. Vielleicht schaffe ich es, mich ab und zu von unterwegs zu melden. Wenn nicht, werde ich meine Berichte dort nach unserer Rückkehr einstellen.

How appropriate! For in two days I will hit the road once again, with only the bare essentials on my back, to straighten my perspective on life again by the simplicity of a pilgrim’s way of living. This time I will be walking the Portuguese Way of Saint James, the Caminho Português from Porto to Santiago de Compostela, the pilgrimage Linda made ​last year. My husband will accompany me on condition that he will not have to sleep in dormitories. Hubby sometimes just is a bit touchy ;-) This makes the planning of the daily legs a little more difficult, but we will manage somehow, I think.

We have scheduled about 12 days for the distance of about 240 km, which is certainly quite feasible.

Just like four years ago, I will report about our pilgrimage on my other blog. Maybe it will be possible for me to report on route every now and then. If not, I'll add my reports there on our return.

Tessin und Isengard

Endlich ist mein Marienquilt fertiggestellt. Er lag eine ganze Weile herum, weil ich nicht wusste, wie ich den Rand quilten sollte. Aber nun hängt er :-)

Finally my Virgin Mary quilt is completed. It has been laying about for a while because I couln't decide how to quilt the border. But now it is ready to be hung :-)

 

Natürlich nähe ich weiterhin die monatlichen Blöcke dieses BoMs. Dies ist Gandalfs Stab und Schwert "Glamdring", nach einer Vorlage von Michelle Thompson.

Of course I am still sewing the monthly blocks of this BoM. This is Gandalf's staff and sword "Glamdring" sewn after a pattern from Michelle Thompson.

Erdbeereis mit Pistazien: diesen Kuschelquilt habe ich inzwischen fertiggestellt und er hat auch bereits einen neuen Besitzer gefunden :-)

Vor einer Woche war ich auf der "Nadelwelt" in Karlsruhe. Es gab wieder viele interessante Werke zu sehen. Meinen Fotoapparat habe ich diesmal in der Tasche gelassen. Auf dem Bernina-Blog gibt es jedoch einen schönen Bericht mit Bildern von der Ausstellung. 


A week ago I visited an exhibition called "Nadelwelt" in Karlsruhe. Even though there were many interesting quilts I didn't take any photos this time. There is a great résumé with pics on the Bernina blog, though.



Gaststar war dieses Jahr die faszinierende Jette Clover, bei der ich vor fünf Jahren mal einen Kurs belegt hatte (siehe hier!). Da ich ihre Werke sehr mag, habe ich mir ihr neues Buch zugelegt und es von ihr signieren lassen. Nach all der Zeit konnte sie sich sofort an mich erinnern und wusste sie auf Anhieb meinen Namen! 


The fascinating Jette Clover had been guest star this year. I had participated in one of her workshops five years ago. As I am an admirer of her art I bought her new book and had it signed by her. After all these years she remembered me at once and knew my name straightaway!

Galadriel's Mirror

"With water from the stream Galadriel filled the basin to the brim, and breathed on it, and when the water was still again she spoke. 'Here is the mirror of Galadriel,' she said. 'I have brought you here so that you may look in it, if you will.'
      The air was very still, and the dell was dark, and the Elf-lady beside him was tall and pale. 

      'Remember that the Mirror shows many things, and not all have yet come to pass. Some never come to be, unless those that behold the visions turn aside from their path to prevent them. The Mirror is a dangerous guide of deeds.' [...] 

      'Do you advise me to look?' asked Frodo.

Cabo Verde Souvenirs

Hab mir ein paar Meter Stoff von den Kapverden mitgebracht!

Außerdem das für die Kapverden typische Ouril-Spiel, das dort überall gespielt wird...

... und das hochprozentige Nationalgetränk "Grogue".

Africa

Nach diesem langen und zähen Winter bin ich mit der ganzen Familie in die Sonne geflogen, und zwar auf die Kapverdischen Inseln.

Wegen des starken Passatwindes, der quasi ständig weht, ist die Insel Sal ein Paradies für Kite-Surfer. Es regnet hier fast nie, denn die Insel ist sehr flach, sodass eventuelle Wolken darüber hinwegziehen. Die höchste Erhebung ist der Monte Grande mit nur 405 Metern Höhe. Das Meer ist türkisblau und die breiten, feinsandigen Sandstrände kilometerlang. 

We had a long and nasty winter here in Germany. So my family and I decided to get away to a place where the sun always shines, the ocean is turquoise-blue and where there are kilometres of sandy beaches - the CAPE VERDE ISLANDS. Due to the strong trade wind that blows from November to June the island Sal is an Eldorado for kite-surfers.

Buracona: natürliche Meeresschwimmbecken an der Nordwestküste und das "Olho Azul", das "Blaue Auge", ein 10 m tiefes Loch in der Felsdecke, in dem sich das Sonnenlicht zwischen 11:00 und 13:00 Uhr im Meerwasser bricht und es intensiv türkisblau zum Strahlen und Glitzern bringt.

Pedra  de Lume (feuriges Gestein) ist eine natürliche Saline im Krater eines Vulkanes, der unter dem Meeresspiegel liegt. Früher wurde das Salz darin industriell abgebaut, mittels Seilbahn zum Hafen transportiert und dort in alle Welt verschifft.  Heute leben nur noch ein paar Fischer in dem kleinen, verlassenen Ort.

For Easter I got out this chicken quilt. It is one of my very early creations ;-)

Khazad-dûm

"Moria... You fear to go into those mines. The dwarves delved too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in the darkness of Khazad-dum... shadow and flame."

Im Monat März gab es beim Herr-der-Ringe-BoM nur einen Block, der aber dafür dreimal so groß ist wie die anderen.
Durch die Hallen von Khazad-dûm fällt ein Lichtstrahl und erhellt einige Säulen, während andere im Dunkeln liegen.

There is only one pattern this month for the BoM "Not All Who Wander Are Lost", but then it is three times bigger than the others.
In the halls of Khazad-dûm light is shed on some of the pillars whereas others remain in darkness.
